Clothes Make the Man

It is not being superficial – it is a fact of life, human nature – how we look, what we wear – affects how people see us, how they respond to us. (Psychology Today, Feb 10, 2010; ‘Do Clothes Makes the Man?’) So guys out there, whether married or single, straight or gay, young or old – if you want more action, (did I say that???), time to take a closer look at your closet. Seriously, action aside, many guys may want to dress better but don’t know where to begin. Let me start by sharing a few facts, according to the ‘Law of Ginger”:

– Dressing better will enhance your life: personal, professional, confidence in general
– Dressing better will cost more…..
– Dressing better will take effort, energy, and time

Look at the photo of the gentleman in the above photo….nothing too wild or too colorful, but definitely stylish and sophisticated. His clothes are dark neutrals, including the boots, and most of all, they FIT WELL. If your clothes are tailored to fit you well, this makes a huge difference.
Wait a minute!!! You are not a man??? You are a female reading this??? Yes, of course you are. But I bet there is a man in your life……….

Any room for improvement in the jeans department? That’s a simple place to start. Rather than wearing the comfy, higher waisted, “blue” jeans, look for a slimmer fit, in a darker wash…While Peter still has some ‘comfy’ jeans hidden away from me (I know they still exist!) his nice jeans are Converse by John Varvatos(button fly) or Levis 511s. What is just as important as the jean choice is the shoe choice – never ever a sneaker that is for the gym! There are many comfortable and stylish shoe choices depending on the time of year and on your own personal style and preferences.

How does a guy develop his own personal style? It’s not the same as us ladies who are flipping through magazines and admiring other women from our toddler years….It is an interesting question that I posed to my husband…..Answer: Peter says he pays attention. He listens to me when I make comments (all too often) and then pays attention. Magazines, catalogues, on television, out and about in public…. His style is more European, others may like a more preppy look, or a conservative American look. There are many choices to explore to find a “look” that feels right for you…….

If you are a man reading this, I hope it was inspirational – if you are a woman, I hope you will share with a man in your life…..at the request of my 24 year old son (who inherited the clothing ‘bug’), there will be more to come……….
