Keep It Current

Elie Tahari blazer, Theory trousers, Via Spiga booties

Do you ever get in a rut with your business casual wardrobe?  Same old black pants, same old black blazer?  These are excellent basics, but sometimes it’s fun to change it up with a fresh color mix. These brick red trousers (TJMaxx!) are great for fall, topped with a charcoal gray sweater. Resisting my gravitation to a perfectly reliable black jacket, I went for an eye-popping option instead – a white one!  Forget the old rule of not wearing white after labor day – white is a year round color; pay more attention to the fabric, avoiding light cottons/linens which look too summery.  Choose tailored, classic pieces then add an edgy accessory for a current look that works for the office.

My edgy accessory is a Hobo studded belt that I have had for many years. It’s a treasured piece I enjoy often for weekend wear, it felt completely different and fun to wear it with a work outfit. When work pants are very fitted through the hips/butt – regardless of your hot bod – it is best to wear a long jacket instead of  a cropped one. (This sleeveless tunic gives added ‘butt coverage’!) It’s not that you can’t ever remove your jacket, but it’s more professional to be discreet about your ‘assets’.  😉

You knew a scarf was coming!

This is a deliciously soft scarf with bold southwestern icons that looks different depending on what colors you want to highlight. Found at Revolve in Lexington.

  • You are definitely talking to me in this post. My wardrobe is a sea of black and blue jeans (I do live in NYC after all!). I love the line about being discreet about ones assets.

    • New Yorkers certainly wear a lot of black, yet I am also constantly inspired by unique mixes of color and style. I am determined to wear this white blazer through the winter! 😉
