Styling a Denim Jacket

Spring season is the perfect time to pull out your denim jacket or buy a new one!  There are so many different variations that options are really about what you like the best…cropped, oversized, faded blue, dark blue, distressed, or even white.  You can spend hundreds on a designer label or next to nothing on a more generic brand.  I have a favorite white denim jacket by JCrew and this cropped jacket in faded blue. Denim jackets are really ageless and timeless; when I was shopping many years back with my daughter in American Eagle I saw this jacket and loved the fit – American Eagle???  For teenagers? Why not!

Adding a faded blue denim jacket is great way to break up black outfits, when a black jacket would be too blah, too predictable, or you just are in the mood for a change.  These floral jeans are Seven For All Mankind, AKA my ‘fancy pants‘!  Black merino sweater with white collar, Kate Spade.

When the fit is perfect and it’s under $50 you can’t go wrong!

One of my favorite ways to wear a denim jacket is with a feminine or sexy dress; it is unexpected and the denim adds a current, edgy vibe.

Another fun look is to wear your denim jacket with a white cotton shirt. Again, think about balance: conservative/proper shirt with casual/edgy jacket. Simple. Effortless. Cool.

Finally, here is a denim jacket that I would love to add to my closet – dark blue, fitted, with a touch of lycra. A bit more refined than the faded blue, but still adds that cool and casual vibe.  Somewhat more grown up?

A few final tips:

  • Blue denim jacket with blue denim jeans can work though I have not tried it yet. If you do decide to go ‘head to toe’ denim, be sure there is some contrast in the colors, and wear a dressier shoe to avoid looking like you are ready to work on a farm. 😉
  • Remember to keep an open mind to brands – if it fits well and you like the color, who cares what the label is!
  • Pin one on!  Try a glitzy rhinestone pin on your denim jacket. Vintage pins from antique shops are also fun on denim, maybe even a few of them grouped together.

Do you have a denim jacket that you like?  How old is it?  What’s your favorite way to wear it?

  • I have a white denim jacket from Eddie Bauer that I got on sale for $14 about 10 years ago. I love it. I also have a fitted, dark blue denim jacket from J. Jill. It goes well with khaki pants or dresses. Love your cropped one.
