A Walk in the Woods

Those of us that are hardy New Englanders are accustomed to cold temperatures, ice, plenty of snow. This winter we are being put to the test – the snow just keeps on coming – it is interfering with work, social events, and causing many people the “winter blues”….
“What do you want to do today?”, my husband asked me this morning….Ughhh…….did my share of shopping yesterday, I don’t want to spend the day in the kitchen, I don’t want to sit in a dark movie theater….I want to be outside in the sun. “Let’s go for a walk in the woods,” I answered (he looks at me like I’m nuts)…..”Someplace close to home that has a trail, somewhere pretty…” OK! Just five minutes from where we live is a wildlife sanctuary, so we bundled up and off we went…..parked the car, began our hike…..snowy, sunny, pretty, but you call this a “trail”??? The snow was deep and we had to walk single file to avoid snow from going in our boots. No holding hands. What fun is this? Back to car.
As we were driving away we noticed a different entrance where several people were coming/going with cross country skis. Let’s try again! It was perfect……snow, trees, sun, quiet…..a wide enough path to walk side by side….just what the doctor ordered. I won’t pretend that this was a major hiking expedition, but it was just nice to enjoy the fresh air (and each other) on a cold winter day.

The coat I wore today was a gift from Ginger over 30 years ago….she bought it at a Ralph Lauren outlet store on a clearance sale….it is very heavy and not comfortable to drive in, but very very warm, good for today. The “swing style” made it possible for me to wear this through two pregnancies….

Being outside today, you can feel that the sun is different, it’s warmer, it has a hint of spring to come…….let’s not wish away winter because life is short enough! What about you? What do you do on these cold wintery days?

  • What do I do on cold winter days? I used to like to shovel and play with the kids in the snow but at this point this winter (also in Boston) I watch the kids playing in the snow through the slider while sipping my warm beverage. 😉
