What’s better than a bargain dress? A dress that’s FREE!…Yessiree, by pairing together some simple basic separates that you probably have in your own closet, all you need to do is add a belt and you create the ‘look’ of a new dress without spending a dime. 🙂
Starting at the top, this is a fine wool sweater by Theory that I have had for years…on the bottom, a fitted black cotton skirt, pull-on style and super comfy…
With a statement belt in black patent leather and suede, voila! You have created a basic black ‘dress’ that could take you anywhere! Since it was taking me to work, I opted for a bootie that would be comfortable yet with current standout style.
To keep the overall look chic and sophisticated, bold earrings and no necklace…
A basic black dress is the perfect base for a not so basic jacket!
Finally, I added a wool wrap as a topper, and off to work I go!
The Bottom Line:
- With simple basic separates, you can create a ‘new dress’ from your own closet.
- Always keep your eye out for great belts rather than shopping for a belt when you ‘need’ one. (This belt was a Revolve find from many moons ago.)
- Shoe choice – including toe shape – can make or break a look. (A round toe ballet flat would be unflattering, and a pointy toed stiletto would give it a dated look.)
- Resist the temptation to always pile on the pearls! I love pearls and necklaces, but there is also something super chic about wearing just bold earrings.
Work hard. Play hard. Enjoy every day.
