Business Casual: A Day in J

J McLaughlin, that is! A clothing business that was founded by two brothers in the seventies with a focus on classic style and a ‘welcoming’ shopping experience. Today they have over 140 stores in the US, and you can also get lucky and find some pieces in consignment shops…as for this particular outfit, the skirt and the shirt are both by JM, bought quite a few years ago…

JMcLaughlin offers a somewhat preppy look, and lots of soft colors…but not all! Because I am not one to wear pastels often, I keep an eye out for patterns that mix in with my wardrobe and preferred colors…that way you can make it your own personal style. Here I added a black blazer by Zadig and Voltaire and made the look less conservative with high heeled white booties… If you haven’t worn this brand before you are in for a treat when you feel the fabric and experience the super comfortable fit…they are mostly synthetic knits and are perfect for traveling…

This sleeveless white shirt is a fabulous layering piece year round, under blazers or sweaters…machine washable and needs no ironing. As for the silk tie, my intention was to wear it as a floppy bow, but when I put it on and looked in the mirror, I loved the balance of the feminine styles on the bottom with a more masculine ‘tie’ on top…

Since you won’t find these older pieces when you head out shopping this year, here are a few current JMcLaughlin pieces available online today – pieces that caught my eye that I think would be great additions to a summer business casual wardrobe…

A fun navy print skirt that could easily be dressed up or down…with the length above the knee, wear it with a low block heel to work or with stylish sneakers on the weekend…

Cardigans can be tricky to get right without looking sloppy or overly casual…this one has a nice slim cut and the length makes it more sophisticated – wear it with jeans, slim trousers, or with a sleeveless dress. And what a great color this is for summer, right?

If you don’t have a navy pencil skirt, this might be one to try! A perfect business wardrobe basic that is timeless…wear it with a nude/camel shoe, a red shoe, a metallic shoe, endless options…if you end up purchasing any of these pieces, be sure to get yourself a basic white shirt too!

Have a great weekend everyone!
