If you have ventured out into a mall recently, you will see that summer has gone, even if the warm days remain! Boots, sweaters, coats, scarves – it’s that time again!…..there are so many cute clothes, new fashion trends, it can definitely be overwhelming…..what the heck to buy????  Certainly a lot depends on your lifestyle, your budget, and what is currently in your closet….with that said, here are my personal do’s and don’ts regarding fall trends for 2015…..

DON’T spend too much on a super trendy item.  Fringe is huge this year on everything from jackets, skirts, handbags, to boots….it is fun for sure for casual wear and I look forward to wearing a fringed skirt I found for under $50!  No need to splurge on something that will not have lasting value……How about these great booties by Sam Edelman? They would look great with skinny jeans, leggings, or a denim skirt…

DO buy leather!  Leather skirts, leather jackets, leather pants are all softer than ever and suitable for both work and weekend wear….real leather will be pricey, but if a classic style, it is a good investment….there are also many faux leather options that are just as nice!  I have faux and real pieces and love both…..leather is a great way to add texture to an outfit, especially if you like all black….check out this fabulous leather skirt from Talbots – what a great color!  It’s a no brainer with denim, and would look so elegant with a black sweater and tights….

DON’T buy “fall colors”……leave the burnt orange and muddy greens to the pumpkins and falling leaves….most earthy colors are not flattering to your skin tones and will leave you looking washed out….same could be true of deep plums and cranberry colors….Choose the colors that look best on YOU, regardless of the time of year.  What should change more than color is the fabric – time for wools, cashmere, suede, leather…heavier fabrics, more texture.

DO add a cape to your wardrobe….Capes were a hot item at NYC fashion week and they are perfect for New England changeable temperatures….wear a cape with jeans or with a pencil skirt to work – comfortable and easy…they can be found in a wide range of prices in the scarf/accessory departments….Nordstrom’s and Bloomies both have many options….I often enjoy wearing a black wool cape with a ruffled edge that was Ginger’s…this steel gray cape below would be a nice alternative to black.

DO have fun with fur! Whether you choose faux or real, fur is everywhere and adds instant glamour and drama! You might prefer the subtle touch of just a fur collar, or perhaps a vintage jacket that will add character to a simple dress….No need to save these pieces for special occasions or evening wear – enjoy them day or night, and remember – everyday is special.

  • Hey! I LIKE fall colors, they are the colors that look best on me. This fall, I will look for some tops in gold and maybe marsala, if it’s the right shade. In the past I’ve learned that gold and rust garments must be snapped up as soon as possible, because they never stay around long, and they don’t come out every fall. I guess the designers have your attitude about fall colors, ha ha! As for leather, I always buy leather shoes and boots. It looks so much nicer, and synthetics don’t breathe. Fake fur is usually fine, and it’s easier on the budget. (Not to mention, easier on the animal as well). Anyway, they do make some really nice fake furs these days.

    • After further thought, I should have said “Don’t buy fall colors just because it’s fall.” If they look best on you, of course that’s what you want to buy! Duh, me!
