Inspired by Katharine

001 These cocoa linen pants by Alice and Olivia are my latest wardrobe treasure – very ‘Katharine Hepburn’ and good for work or play……I have always admired the wide-legged look, but was not sure it would work on my petite frame….one day when poking through Nordstrom’s, a saleslady suggested I give them a try, what’s the harm of that? The harm was that I LOVED them, they were pricey and NOT on sale…..forgive me Peter, but I broke my rule of only buying what I need when it is not on sale……Well, well, well…..the stars were aligned, the shopping angels were looking out for me – ten days later I happened to notice on Nordstrom’s online that they were 40% OFF….I immediately picked up the phone to call the local store….not only did they credit me the 40%, but they did it OVER THE PHONE!  Nordstrom’s, you rock!katherine hepburn pants

To take style inspiration from a fashion icon need not mean copying them head to toe…Katharine supposedly had an aversion to glamour, preferred masculine looks and mostly wore flat shoes….that’s certainly not me!

Before heading to the tailor to have the pants hemmed I needed to decide which shoes I would wear with them – you cannot hem them for a high heel then wear them with a flat or vice versa….my choice was the heel, of course….. I brought the shoes with me to the tailor to get the length just right…..003

These are Stuart Weitzman suede platforms, comfortable and a nice neutral color….for a gal that’s barely 5′ 3″, boy do I feel tall in this outfit!…….In the fall I will try them with a black bootie of the same heel hight…

The simple yet sexy top is a fine merino wool by A.L.C.….remember, wool is not only for winter….

With voluminous pants, keep your top and/or jacket fitted to avoid looking sloppy……..

Just because the pants are wide-legged, it doesn’t mean you will look wide….a high waistline, slim fit through the hips, and the absence of pockets creates a very flattering look…..

Because of the cocoa color these linen pants will be great right into early fall….fabulous with a plain white cotton shirt, a cropped sweater, or a fitted black top…

Classic elegance with a Theory cotton shirt

What is especially great about these pants is that they are different from what I already had in my closet…while on one hand it’s good to stick with styles you know work on you, it is FUN to try something new…..variety is the spice of life!  😉

Would YOU try these???

  • Love this post! I have been wondering about wide-legged pants and avoiding them for the same reasons. These pants look great with the defined waist and belted look. I also thought wide-legged pants would only look right with 3″ stiletto heels but these are fine with a wedge heel. I especially like them with the black top and white blouse–very on-trend and professional. Thanks for the ideas!

  • This outfit looks amazing on you. I have tried wide-legged pants in the past and could not wear them because I kept tripping over them. Now I realize that I didn’t have them hemmed to the length I needed for the shoes I wore with them. I may need to give them another try! At 5’4, I do love to look and feel TALL:)
