Made In The Shade

Bet I was the first person ever to get emotional in a lamp store, but yessiree I did…

Back in November, Peter and I headed out to Concord Lamp and Shade in Concord, MA to drop off a lamp to be repaired OR perhaps to replace it with a new one…

After looking at the options for swing wall lamps, there was nothing to improve upon what we already had so we decided on the repair…what brought tears to my eyes, however, was the recommendation to do custom lamp shades to give the lamps an update – something I remembered learning from Ginger, and it brought back a flood of memories…

Lamps are the jewelry of a room…details make a big difference…the fabric and color of a shade matters…pay attention to shape and proportion…you should not expect to keep the shade that comes with a lamp…be creative…lampshade trim adds beautiful finishing touches…always top off your lamp with a decorative finial.. All lamp lessons from my mom…

This is a lamp in my home that once belonged to Ginger…it has a rectangular silk pleated shade that she had customized with THREE different layers of trim…

There are actual terms for these different types of trim, but I’m no expert on the names (though they certainly are experts in the Concord shop)…the ruby crystal finial was an elegant final touch by my mom…

After wiping my tears and blowing my nose (not easy with a mask on) I got down to business! Somewhere up in heaven I knew Ginger would be proud…

This is the BEFORE…

And here is the AFTER! Elegant, warm, and maybe a bit French? 🙂

With the patterned fabric of the shade, I decided on a simple gold cord trim…

They made such a big difference to the style of the room – I am absolutely delighted!!! If you notice, we just happened to have our red sheets on the bed – we also have bold leopard sheets which will also be fun with the red shades…

Ginger would love. She would also be glad that I remembered her lamp ‘lessons’. How could I forget? 😉

Stay well. Live well. Enjoy the now.
